Name & role: Pippa Waterman – Co-Founder

How long have you worked in infrastructure/energy?
I joined the energy industry with Magnox at Dungeness A when it was still generating in 2002, as a PR Officer covering the South-East and quickly realised that I love industrial workplaces (my father is an engineer, so I think it comes from those genes). Over the last 20+ years, I’ve been fortunate to be in generating nuclear, nuclear decommissioning (UK and North America), oil and gas, nuclear new build, airport, offshore wind and most recently fusion – all super exciting projects in their own way.
What are your special skills?
A previous boss always used to point me at a problem with the simple instruction ‘fix it’ and then leave me to it. So, I think it’s the ability to see big picture as well as detail and be able to get to the nub of issues quickly and get ‘stuff’ done. I really enjoy highly structured environments like delivering to Planning Act or permit requirements and regulations – an area that communications often doesn’t seem a natural fit.
Any career highlights/favourite type of projects?
That is tricky actually as I’ve enjoyed all of them in different ways. I really enjoy super complex multi organisation projects where you have a large team with different characters and skill sets all pulling in the same direction. I like joining new sectors, so Gatwick Airport Northern Runway was a great project to be involved in, as has been offshore wind for now JERA Nex bp at Mona and Morgan Transmission.
However, anyone who knows me, knows I have to mention Horizon and Wylfa Newydd, leading the consultation team over three years with statutory consultations, TCPAs, examination and ongoing community engagement, with regular trips to Anglesey, was just an amazing project with an amazing community and feels very much like unfinished business to me.
Random fact about you:
I lived in Calgary, Canada for two years having an ‘adult gap year(s)’ working in oil and gas and just had the best time. I suffer from ‘itchy feet’ and like moving around, seeing new places and learning new things, I guess that’s why working for C3 is perfect for me!
